UH Edges Cal Poly In Track Dual Meet

SEATTLE, Wash. - The University of Hawai`i women's track and field team defeated Cal Poly, 67-56, in a dual meet as part of the University of Washington Open, Sunday, at Dempsey Indoor on the UW campus. The Rainbow Wahine set seven more personal bests after breaking eight PRs on Saturday at the Husky Classic.

In the arrangement between the schools, no more than two athletes could score points for either team per event. UH accumulated 67 points in the 14 events, while scoring the maximum eight points in the 3000-meter run, high jump, long jump, and weight throw events. Cal Poly tallied 56 points with the maximum eight in the 60-meter dash, 400-meter run, pole vault, and shot put events.

Among the highlights for the Rainbow Wahine was Annett Wichmann's school record in the 60-meter hurdles. The junior clocked in at 9.04 seconds, eclipsing Candace Rosenthal's previous best of 9.07 seconds.

UH finished first and second overall among all participants at the UW Open in the weight toss, as Novelle Murray (60-1.75) and Meghan Weaver (51-8.5) led all throwers. Emily Sheppard placed second overall in the high jump (5-7) and Wichmann was second overall in the long jump (17-9.75).

Other Rainbow Wahine setting personal bests on Sunday were Mallory Gilbert in the long jump, Brittani Daniels in the shot put, Sharlene Carillo in the mile, Ashley Monfort in the 600-meter run, Jessica Trujillo in the 60-meter dash, and Tava Tedesco and Michel Wilson in the 3000-meter run.

The Rainbow Wahine return to Honolulu to host the second of four Sunrise Meets at Cooke Field, Saturday, February 17. This week's meet, the Terry Albritton Invitational, is named after the late UH athlete who broke the world shot put record at an all-comers meet at UH in 1976.
