HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine basketball team (2-1, 0-0) got back on the winning track, defeating Northern Arizona, 67-51 in the final game of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic in front of 1, 585 fans at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Senior Tanya Smith recorded her third straight double-double of the season, tallying 11 points and grabbing 11 boards. She also had team-highs in assists (4), blocks (4), and steals (2). Her stellar performance throughout the tournament earned her a spot on the all-tourney team.
Hawai`i had a balanced attack, with nine out of 10 players scoring. For the game, the `Bows shot 42 percent from the floor, with 13 of their buckets coming in the paint. They also converted 21 points off of NAU's 17 turnovers.
Sophomore Megan Tinnin and freshman Keisha Kanekoa both led the team with 12 points a piece. For Tinnin it was the second straight game scoring in double figures, while Kanekoa added nine rebounds and two assists.
NAU held a two-point lead twice early in the game, but the Rainbow Wahine never relinquished the lead after the 13:26 mark in the first half. UH was able to build as much as a 16-point lead in the second half. Hawai`i scored eight-unanswered points late in the second half to pull away from the Lumberjacks down the stretch.
UC Davis, who are playing in their first year as a Division I program, went undefeated in the tournament to capture the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic title.
