HONOLULU - University of Hawai'i men's basketball head coach Bob Nash picked up his first career victory in the Rainbow Warriors' 84-55 rout over Alcorn State, Sunday night, in a non-conference game at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Nash, a longtime UH associate coach who replaced Riley Wallace, lost his first two games as head coach. But his first win came with little difficulty as the 'Bows used a 23-6 first half run to blow the game wide open.
Guard Riley Luettgerodt led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting. Forward Bobby Nash added 15 points and six rebounds and Stephen Verwers had 10 points and five boards. Forward Bill Amis posted nine points and nine rebounds. All 10 players in uniform scored for the 'Bows, who improved to 1-2 in Nash's inaugural season.
UH shot a season-high 50 percent from the field despite committing 21 turnovers. Defensively, the 'Bows held the Braves to 29 percent shooting, including 6-of-25 from three-point range. UH out-rebounded ASU, 56-to-37.
The Braves (0-3) were led by Anthony Ford's 16 points.
In the first half, UH led 8-3 before ASU scored six straight to take a one-point lead five minutes in. But the 'Bows responded with a 23-6 run to build a 31-15 advantage. Hawai'i entered the half with a 45-24 lead.
It was more Hawai`i in the second half, as the 'Bows extended their lead to as many as 31.
The 'Bows head to Albuquerque, N.M. for a non-conference game against New Mexico, Wednesday, Nov. 21. Tip-off is 7:00 p.m. MST at The Pit. The game is the first of an in-season home-and-home series with UH's former Western Athletic Conference rival.
