DENVER - University of Hawai`i junior
Annett Wichmann was named the Western Athletic Conference women's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week for her performance at last weekend's Washington Invitational.
Wichmann, a junior from Jena, Germany (SportGymnasium Jena), won the pentathlon at the UW Invitational on Friday, Jan. 26 at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle, Wash. Wichmann accumulated an NCAA provisional score of 4,039 points, placing her first in the WAC this season. Wichmann also heaved the day's top throw in the shot put (45-7 3/4), placing her third in the WAC.
Wichmann is the reigning WAC heptathlon champion and became only the second UH athlete to participate in the NCAA Outdoor Championship last season. Wichmann's pentathlon score will likely earn her a spot at this March's NCAA Indoor Championship in Fayetteville, Ark. No UH athlete has ever qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship.
