'Bows Take Over WAC Lead With 5-2 Win Over Sacramento State

Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (32-12, 10-6 WAC) defeated the Sacramento State Hornets (20-27, 8-10) in front of a crowd of 3,313 on senior day at Les Murakami Stadium Sunday, moving UH into first in the WAC standings. Ian Harrington (5-3) picked up the complete-game victory, allowing just six hits and one earned run.

Luis Avila came up big on his senior day, blasting a three-run homer, his sixth of the season. Esteban Lopez added a 2-for-3 game with two runs.

The Rainbows got on the board in the second inning, as Jorge Franco hit a RBI-double to left field, scoring Lopez. Franco later left the game after colliding with shortstop Elijah Christensen on a fly ball in the third. The Hornets would then score a run in the top of the third on a balk, tying the score at 1-1.

But Avila quickly changed that, hitting his homer to straight centerfield, giving the 'Bows the 4-1 edge. Jonathan Hee later drove in a run in the sixth to make it 5-1. Sac State scored again in the eighth, putting up an unearned run, but it wasn't enough as Harrington took care of the Hornets in the ninth, ending the game at 5-2.

The 'Bows will now leave for a five-game road trip in Louisiana, starting with a mid-week game at Grambling State on Tuesday, May 2, at 7 p.m. (2 p.m. HST).
