'Bows Pull Into Tie For WAC Lead With 5-2 Win Over Sacramento State

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (31-12, 9-6 WAC) defeated the Sacramento State Hornets (20-26, 8-9) 5-2 in front of a sold out crowd of 4,577 at Les Murakami Stadium Saturday, moving the 'Bows into a tie with Fresno State for first in the WAC standings. Justin Costi (6-1) pitched 7.0 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits with six strikeouts to earn the victory. Tyler Davis pitched the other two innings to earn his second save while Mitch Lively (0-4) took the loss for the Hornets.

Robbie Wilder led the 'Bows, going 3-for-3 with a run, a double and a stolen base. Derek DuPree was 1-for-3 with three RBI and a double while Jonathan Hee provided a 2-for-4 game with two runs and one RBI.

Brian Blauser got the Hornets on the board first, blasting a solo home run to left field in the top of the second. But the Rainbows quickly responded. Esteban Lopez scored the first run on a Sac State throwing error, before DuPree smacked a two-run double off the right field wall to put Hawai`i up 3-1.

UH added to their lead in the fourth as Hee and DuPree both drove in runs to make it 5-1. The Hornets would add a run in the fifth before the Rainbow pitchers took over, allowing just two baserunners in the final four innings, preserving the 5-2 win.

The two teams will close out the series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. on senior day. The game will be the last home game for Luis Avila, Costi, Matthew Inouye, Lopez, Adam Roberts, Dean Turner and Wilder. Those seven seniors will be honored following the game.
