HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (28-11, 6-5 WAC) beat the New Mexico State Aggies (14-27, 1-9) 10-3 in front of a crowd of 3,406 at the Les Murakami Stadium Saturday.
Justin Costi (5-1) struck out eight, giving up two runs in 7.2 innings to get the win while Jason Conner (2-3) took the loss for NMSU.
Robbie Wilder had the big day at the plate, blasting his first career home run in a 2-for-5 game with three RBI and a stolen base. Luis Avila went 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs while Matthew Inouye was 2-for-5 with a triple, one RBI and one run. Jonathan Hee (2-for-3, two runs, RBI), Justin Frash (2-for-5, run, double) and Derek DuPree (2-for-4, RBI, run, double) also added multiple hit games for the 'Bows.
Avila started off the Rainbow scoring, hitting a sacrifice fly, scoring DuPree to make it 1-0. Avila then drove in another run in the third before scoring on an Aggie error, pushing their lead to 3-0. Meanwhile, Costi was in complete control, retiring the first 12 batters, pitching four perfect innings before allowing a leadoff single in the fifth.
Hawai`i then put it out of reach in the bottom of the fifth. Inouye drove in Avila before scoring on a RBI-single by Hee to make it 5-0. After Esteban Lopez scored on an error, Wilder provided the big blast, hitting a two-run homer to left field, making the score 8-0. The 'Bows would add two runs in the seventh before the Aggies put up two in the eighth and one in the ninth to avoid the shutout, making the final 10-3.
UH and NMSU will close out the series tomorrow at the Les Murakami Stadium at 1:05 p.m.
