Rainbows Clinch First-Ever Series At Nevada With 8-5 Comeback Victory

Box Score

RENO, Nev. - Justin Frash hit a three-run double with two outs in the ninth inning to push the University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (27-11, 5-5 WAC) to a 8-5 win over the Nevada Wolf Pack (15-18, 5-6) in front of a crowd of 1,165 at Peccole Park Saturday, giving UH their first-ever series win in Reno. Tyler Davis (2-1) gave up just two hits and an unearned run in 3.0 innings of relief to earn the win. Wesley Dorsett (2-4) took the loss for Nevada.

Frash ended up 3-for-5 on the day with four RBI, one run and a double. Joseph Spiers added a 1-for-4 game with two runs, three RBI and a triple, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Luis Avila went 2-for-4 with one RBI while Elijah Christensen and Robbie Wilder both scored two runs each.

Nevada got out to a good start, scoring a run in the bottom of the first while holding UH hitless for 3.2 innings. The Pack also kept the Rainbows off the board for five innings before Hawai`i started to make their run. The 'Bows put up five-straight hits in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run triple by Spiers, giving them a 3-1 edge.

That lead only held for an inning before the Wolf Pack put up four runs, two of which were unearned, in the bottom of the seventh, giving UN a 5-3 advantage.

Hawai`i had a chance in the top of the eighth, loading the bases with just one out. But Nevada forced the 'Bows into a double play, killing the rally.

UH wouldn't let another opportunity go by in the ninth, though. Kris Sanchez hit a pinch-hit single, before walks by Christensen, Wilder and Spiers put a run on the board for the Rainbows to cut the deficit back to 5-4. Then Frash came up with his heroics, smacking his double down the left line with a two-strike count to give Hawai`i the 7-5 edge. Avila later drove in Frash to add an insurance run before Davis retired three-straight batters in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the 8-5 victory.

The Rainbows will go for the sweep tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Peccole Park.
