HONOLULU - No. 4 Hawai`i ran its win streak to nine games with a three-set sweep over No. 9 UCLA in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match tonight in front of 4,737 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
With the victory, Hawai`i improved to 13-4 overall and 11-3 in the MPSF. UCLA dropped to 12-11 and 5-9 in league play.
Game 1 saw the Warriors jumped out to leads of 6-1 and 19-10 before the closing out the game, 30-24.
The second game was almost a mirage image of the first as UH again started out strong with a 5-1 advantage and increased it to 18-11, playing side the rest of the way to a 30-23 win.
In the third game, UCLA had the quick start taking an 8-4 lead and held it until the Warriors tied it at 24. The two teams played side out until UH took its first lead in Game 3 27-26 on one of 16 kills recorded by Lauri Hakala. A UCLA error gave UH a two point advantage which they maintained the rest of the way to win, 30-28.
Hakala led all hitters with 16 kills while posting a very solid .538 hitting percentage. Matt Carere slammed down 12 kills, while Jose Delgado added 11. Setter Brian Beckwith handed out 42 assists on the night as the Warriors out hit the Bruins, .349 to .301.
UCLA was led by Sean O'Malley and Steve Klosterman as each contributed 10 kills apiece.
Hawai`i is home next week to take on Loyola-Chicago of the MIVA in a pair of non-conference matches March 17-18 at the SSC. An all-Alumni match will preceed the March 18 match beginning at 4:00 p.m.
