NAMPA, Idaho - The Hawai'i women's track and field team picked up two more medals at the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championship, Friday, at Jackson Track. Senior
Novelle Murray captured the school's first-ever gold at the indoor championship in the weight toss.
Murray's toss of 60-1.75 (18.33m) easily out-distanced Boise State's Eleni Ypsilanti, who threw 59-7 (18.16m). Also competing in the event for UH were sophomore Meghan Weaver (54-4, 16.56m) and freshman Nicole Awaa (43-2.25, 13.16m). Both posted personal bests.
In the pole vault competition, junior Patricia Gauthier earned the bronze with a leap of 12-4 (3.76m). Idaho's Melinda Owen captured the gold with a jump of 13-3.75 (4.06m). For the Rainbow Wahine, freshmen Jessica Trujillo (12-0, 3.66) and Samantha Weaver (11-0.25, 3.36m) also competed as well as sophomore Candace Rosenthal, who jumped a personal best 9-6.5 (2.91m).
Entering the final day of competition, UH is in fourth place with 32 points. The Rainbow Wahine are looking to break last year's school record performance of 34 points and ninth place showing.
In other events, Rosenthal set a new school record in the 60m hurdles, finishing in 9.07 seconds. The distance medley relay team finished fifth (12:50.48), earning four team points.
On Thursday, sophomore Annett Wichmann captured the bronze in the pentathlon with a school-record performance 3,741 points, an NCAA provisional mark.
The meet concludes on Saturday.
