New Mexico Pulls Away From UH, 7-3

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - New Mexico picked up its first win of the season by downing the Rainbow Wahine, 7-3 in day two of the UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. Both Tyleen Tausaga and Alana Power hit solo home runs for Hawai`i in the defeat.

UH took the early lead in the bottom of the second when Tausaga led the inning off with a home run over the rightfield wall.

But in the top of the third, the hungry Lobos exploded for five runs with two outs. The big blow was UNM's Elcess' three run home run to straight away center.

The Rainbow Wahine tried to chip away at the score, scoring one run in the bottom of the third when Malamaisaua Manuma hit a looping single into left to score Kaulana Gould from second. Another run was added when Alana Power hit her first career home run to pull within two runs.

But the Lobos pulled away in the seventh, scoring two more runs off of reliever Jessica Morton. The final tally showed New Mexico winning, 7-3.

Courtney Baughman took the loss, throwing 5.2 innings, giving up five runs on nine hits, one walk, and five strike outs. Morton threw 1.1 innings, yielding two runs on two hits with three walks and one strike out. On offense, the Rainbow Wahine were led by Power who was 2-2 with a home run; and Tausaga 1-4, home run.

New Mexico's Mendenhall threw 7.0 innings, giving up three runs on five hits, four walks, and three strike outs. They were led by Schmallen who was 2-3 with a double; Deitrich: 1-2, two runs; Chaves, 2-4, one run, two RBI, double; Elcess 2-3, one run, three RBI, home run.

UH will face No.22 Oregon tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. and Central Michigan at 3:45 pm.
