UCI got on the board in the top of the first as their leadoff hitter, Taylor Holiday, doubled on the first pitch of the game before coming around to score, making it 1-0.
Hawai`i had a chance in the bottom of the inning, but Wilder was thrown out at the plate after a UCI error, leaving the Anteaters ahead. UH also stopped a potential second run for UC Irvine in the second as Matthew Inouye gunned down a runner at the plate. On the play, Inouye seemed to injure his back. He took his at bat in the bottomo of the second before leaving the game. It was the first game that Inouye didn't get a hit in this season.
The Rainbows made one final push in the bottom of the ninth as Wilder got on with a walk before Jonathan Hee was hit by a pitch. But Justin Frash hit a ball up the middle that led to a double play, ending the game at 1-0.
The two teams will close out their series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium. Mark Rodrigues will pitch for Hawai`i against UCI's Glenn Swanson.
