Rainbows Take Season-Opener Over San Diego State, 6-2

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team defeated the San Diego State Aztecs 6-2 in front of a crowd of 2,378 on opening-night at the Les Murakami Stadium Wednesday. Steven Wright gave up two runs on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts to get the win. Bruce Billings took the loss for SDSU while Darrell Fisherbaugh pitched 1.1 innings to get the save.

Jorge Franco came up big for the Rainbows, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one RBI and two stolen bases. Jonathan Hee added a 1-for-3 game with a run and an RBI-triple while Matthew Inouye was 1-for-2 with one RBI and one stolen base. Joseph Spiers also added two runs.

The Aztecs got on the board first, as Joseph Scaperotta hit a two-run single in the top of the second.

The 'Bows answered in the third as Hee tripled in Spiers before scoring on a single by Kris Sanchez, tying the score at 2-2. Hawai`i then added runs in the fourth and fifth innings, on RBI-singles by Esteban Lopez and Inouye to take the 4-2 lead.

In the meantime, Wright was mowing down the Aztecs, allowing only two baserunners, who both reached on UH errors, from the third to seventh innings. The 'Bows added two insurance runs in the eighth, on a single by Franco and a sacrifice fly by Eli Christensen, making the final 6-2.

The two teams will face off again tomorrow at the Les Murakami Stadium at 6:35 p.m. with UH's Ian Harrington going against SDSU's Justin Masterson.
