HONOLULU - The Hawai'i men's basketball team captured its 11th Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic title after a 76-60 victory over Creighton, Saturday night, before an energized Stan Sheriff Center crowd of 6, 629. The Rainbow Warriors (8-4) took home their fifth title in the last six years.
Senior guard Matt Lojeski scored a career-high 33 points on 12-of-15 shooting. During a 14-1 second half run, the Racine, Wisc., native scored 13 of the team's points, including three 3-pointers. Lojeski, the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, scored 21 after the break and finished with six points and four assists.
Forward Ahmet Gueye added 19 points and eight rebounds in earning all-tournament team honors. Guard Matt Gibson had six points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
As a team, the 'Bows shot 52.8 percent from the field and held the Bluejays to a 33.9 clip. UH also out-rebounded Creighton, 37-to-28.
With Hawai'i leading by four with just over five minutes to play, the 'Bows put the game out of reach as Gueye converted a three-point play, followed by a Lojeski jumper and Gueye lay-up.
Nate Funk kept the Bluejays (6-4) in the game by scoring a team-high 25 points. He along with forward Dane Watts (12 pts., 7 rebs.) were named to the all-tournament team.
UH led 31-30 at the half but Creighton scored the first eight of the second period to take a 38-31 lead. But that would be its last lead as Lojeski took the game converting three long balls giving the 'Bows a 45-39 advantage with 13:10 left.
Also named to the all-tournament team was Houston's Dion Dowell and Nebraska's Aleks Maric.
The 'Bows next host Tennessee-Martin, Thursday, Dec. 28, at the Stan Sheriff Center. Tip-off is 7:05 p.m.
