HONOLULU - With the help of a 25-0 run to start the game, the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team walloped Oregon State, 85-41, Sunday night, at the Stan Sheriff Center. The 44-point margin of victory for the Rainbow Warriors, who improved to 2-1, was the fourth largest in school history.
Senior guard Matt Lojeski led the 'Bows with 24 points, the second time in as many games the senior eclipsed his career high in scoring. The Racine, Wisc., native also had seven rebounds and six assists, while shooting 9-of-15 from the field.
Junior Bobby Nash got out of his shooting slump, draining all three of his 3-point attempts in the first half. The Honolulu native finished with 13 points on five-of-eight shooting and four assists. Guard Matt Gibson added 14 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
The 'Bows shut down the Beavers (2-3) through the first seven and a half minutes, jumping out to a 25-0 lead. UH was a perfect 9-for-9 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers by Nash.
Moments after Stephen Verwers' missed jumper, OSU scored its first bucket, a Marcel Jones basket at the 12:34 mark. UH maintained its large lead and took a 42-24 advantage into halftime.
The second half was much like the first and the 'Bows finished with their most-lopsided victory since a 57-point win over Redlands in 1972.
For the game, the 'Bows shot 60 percent from the field and forced the Beavers into 25 turnovers. OSU shot 25.4 percent, including a dismal 19.4 clip in the second half.
Kyle Jeffers had 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Beavers.
The 'Bows next head off to Anchorage, Alaska to participate in the Great Alaska Shoot-out next week. UH opens the tournament against Hofstra on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23. The game will be broadcast on ESPN 1420.
