HONOLULU - The No. 7 ranked University of Hawai`i men's volleyball handed No. 9 Ohio State its first loss of the season tonight in a straight-set victory at the Stan Sheriff Center on the second night of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Invitational.
The Warrior (3-1, 2-0 Outrigger) block set the tone early as they recorded 10 stuffs in Game 1 en route to a 30-19 victory and never looked back. UH went on to take Game 2, 30-22, and Game 3, 30-21.
UH finished off the match with 17.5 blocks, an early season-high. Outside hitter Lauri Hakala and middle blocker Dio Dante did the brunt of the damage up front against the Buckeye attack as the pair recorded nine blocks apiece.
Hawai`i outhit Ohio State .380 to .138, with the Buckeyes recording 7.5 blocks.
Outside hitter Jose Delgado was a thorn in the OSU side, as the senior posted season-highs in both kills (17) and hitting percentage (.536). Setter Brian Beckwith spread the offense pretty evenly as Lauri Hakala had nine kills, Matt Carere eight, Dante seven, and Kyle Klinger 6.
The Buckeyes (6-1, 1-1 Outrigger) were led by Stuart Katz who contributed 10 kills.
Hawai`i faces UCLA Friday night at 7 p.m., as the Warriors are looking for their fifth Outrigger title. The Ohio State and Penn State preceed the UH match beginning at 4 p.m.
