No. 18 Pepperdine Stops Hawaii, 2-0

Box Score

WAIPAHU, HI -- Pepperdine showed its worth as a nationally-ranked team with 2-0 win over Hawai`i on the opening evening of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 1-2 with their second straight home loss.

The No. 18 Waves scored a goal in each half to improve to 3-0 on the season. Jessica Fodor scored on a penalty kick in the 21st minute, while Lindsey Redlin scored an insurance goal in the 74th minute. Pepperdine displayed steady, organized and opportunistic play to remain undefeated in four all-time meetings versus UH. Both teams played solid defense, but its was the Waves who took advantage of their chances.

The Rainbow Wahine committed just one foul in the first half and it proved a costly one. The Waves were awarded a penalty kick after a UH foul in the box and Foddor made good to put the Pepperdine on the board midway through the first half. The Waves also capitalized on one of their four shots in the second half, when Megan Woods dispossessed a UH defender at the top of the box and fed Redlin for a close range goal in the 74th minute.

The Rainbow Wahine actually out-shot the Waves 14-9, but it took UH 57 minutes to record their first shot on goal. UH's best chance to score came with eight minutes remaining when a Natasha Kai's attempt in the box flew wide right, following an Aimee Cohen feed. Kai finished with a match-high seven shots.

Pepperdine next will take on Eastern Michigan Saturday night at 7 p.m., while the Rainbow Wahine conclude the tournament with a match against the Eagles on Sunday at 5 p.m.
