WAIPAHU, HI -- Charlene Lui scored the game-winning goal with 33 seconds left in the second overtime period to lift BYU to a 1-0 win over Hawai`i in the championship match of the OHANA Hotels & Resort No Ka Oi at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 1-1 on the season with the loss.
The teams played to a scoreless tie for more than 109 minutes and the match looked to end in a draw before Lui found some open space and launched a left-footed shot that hit the back of the net from 35 yards out. It was a happy homecoming for the senior midfielder and Honolulu native as she was named tournament MVP for her heroics that delivered BYU the championship.
The loss marked UH's first in overtime since the 2001 season. Hawai`i stood undefeated (8-0-7) in its previous 15 overtime matches, including a 2-1 win over George Mason in Friday night's season opener.
BYU controlled much of the game and held a 24-9 shot advantage. The second half began with some rainy conditions, but it did little to affect the Cougars, who increased the pressure by out-shooting UH, 12-2, after the half. The start of the second half saw the Cougars almost exclusively on UH's side of the field as they produced six corner kicks in just the first 10 minutes. For the match, BYU held a 12-1 advantage on corner kicks.
UH, however, remained resilient. The Rainbow Wahine forced overtime and generated four shots in the extra frame to BYU's five. Freshman goalkeeper Kori Lu, an all-tournament selection, finished with seven saves, some of them spectacular, before giving up the game-winning goal in the waning seconds.
The Rainbow Wahine next host the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic, September 2-4. UH will face Pepperdine on Friday night at 7 p.m. to open the tournament.
