HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (22-23, 9-10 WAC) used two big innings to defeat the Nevada Wolf Pack (20-18, 9-7) 11-9 in front of a crowd of 2,027 at Les Murakami Stadium Thursday.
Ricky Bauer (4-3) came on in relief to get the win while Tim Schoeninger (4-6) took the loss for the Pack.
Richard Olsen came in late to get his second save of the season.
Esteban Lopez led the way, going 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs. Joseph Spiers added a 2-for-4 game with one run, one RBI and two stolen bases while Daniel Magana went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
The Wolf Pack got on the board first, scoring two in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a solo home run to center by Shawn Scobee. Nevada proceded to score one run each in the next two innings, increasing their advantage to 4-0 after five and a half innings.
But then the Rainbow bats woke up in the bottom of the sixth, starting with a RBI-single by Magana that scored Erik Ammon. Adam Roberts then singled in another run before Lopez hit a huge single to right center, scoring both Magana and Roberts, tying the game at four. UH added two more runs to cap a six-run sixth, putting them ahead 6-4.
The 'Bows continued to light up the scoreboard in the seventh. Lopez started it off, driving in Magana. Derek DuPree, Spiers and Isaac Omura also had run-scoring singles, while DuPree scored on an error by UN, giving UH a five-run inning to push their lead to 11-4.
The Pack would make it interesting in the end, scoring a run in the eighth and four in the ninth, including a two-run homer by Ben Mummy, to cut the deficit to 11-9. But Olsen came in to shut the door, striking out the final batter to preserve the Rainbow victory.
The two teams will go at it again tomorrow with Colby Summer pitching against Ryan Rodriguez at 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
