HONOLULU - No. 4 Long Beach State knocked off No. 5 Hawai`i tonight in four games, winning 30-23, 30-25, 23-30, 30-22 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation quarterfinal match at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The 3,856 fans saw the Warriors end their season at 19-9 overall and bid farewell to two seniors - setter Daniel Rasay and outside hitter Pedro Azenha.
It was all LBSU in the first game as the 49ers came out smoking posting a .536 hitting percentage led by Yassir Sliti and Robert Tarr's six and five kills, respectively.
In game two, UH jumped out to leads of 9-3 and 11-5. But The Beach came back to tie it at 15, before going on an 8-2 run to take a two games to none lead in the match.
UH came out and dominated game three looking like they may turn the tables on the 49er as they posted 6.5 kills while hitting .444 collectively.
But The Beach (21-9) started game four strong, taking a 7-3 lead and maintained that advantage to close out the match.
Hawai`i was led by Matt Bender's 20 kills. Dio Dante had a solid performance slamming down 10 kills in 11 swings for a .909 hitting percentage. Azenha contributed 16 kills in the losing effort. Azenha served 14 times tonight but did not manage an ace. So, he closes out his career tied for first place with former UH player Costas Theocharidis with 121 career aces.
Libero Alfred Reft, who dug nine kill attempts tonight, broke UH's single-season record of 266 set by Naveh Milo in 1998. Reft totaled 272 this season.
