No. 15 Rice Shuts Out Rainbows 4-0 In Front Of Near-Sell Out Crowd

Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (18-21, 5-9 WAC) fell to the No. 15 Rice Owls (25-13, 7-7) 4-0 in front of a near-sell out crowd of 4,137 at the Les Murakami Stadium Saturday. Colby Summer (1-4) pitched well, giving up just three earned runs in 6.2 innings, but got the loss as Eddie Degerman (5-0) had a complete game-shutout.

Isaac Omura had a good game, going 2-for-4 to raise his WAC-leading batting average to .414. Erik Ammon added a 1-for-2 game while Robbie Wilder went 1-for-3.

The Rainbows squandered an early opportunity in the bottom of the first, leaving a runner on third as they hit into a double play that ended the inning. Rice then took advantage of an error by the 'Bows, scoring an unearned run in the top of the second to get on the board first.

Hawai`i had another chance in the bottom of the third, but again missed a golden opportunity, leaving the bases loaded. The Owls again capitalized as Adam Rodgers hit a solo shot to left field, putting them up 2-0.

Rodgers again came up big in the sixth, driving a RBI-double down the left line to increase the Rice edge to 3-0. The Owls then added another run in the seventh to push their lead to four runs.

That was all Degerman needed, finishing his gem with seven strikeouts and just four hits.
