HONOLULU - The No. 2 ranked University of Hawai`i Warrior volleyball team lost in five sets, 26-30, 30-23, 24-30, 30-27, 18-20 to No. 3 Pepperdine Wednesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Waves (11-1, 11-1 MPSF) got a big night from Sean Rooney, who slammed down a match-high 28 kills, but the biggest obstacle for Hawai`i (11-3, 9-2 MPSF) was the Pepperdine block up front where they outblocked the Warriors, 27.5 to 11.
The match teetered with the Waves winning games one and three, while UH took games two and four.
In game five, the match went to 14-14 before Bender put down a kill to bring the Warriors to match point, but the Waves tied the match following a hitting error by Azenha. It was one of three match points for UH in game five.
The Waves finally closed out the match, 20-18, following a Bender hitting error and a kill by Rooney.
UH's Pedro Azenha and Matt Bender contributed 25 kills apiece for the Warriors in the losing cause.
The two teams meet again Friday, March 4, in a 7 p.m. showdown at the SSC.
