HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (10-8) ran through the No. 3 Florida State Seminoles (21-2) 15-0 in front of a crowd of 2,134 at the Les Murakami Stadium Thursday.
Stephen Bryant (4-0) struck out eight, giving up only one hit in 7.0 innings, to get the win while Michael Hyde (4-2) took the loss for the Seminoles.
The 15-0 win is the most lopsided victory since UH Head Coach Mike Trapasso took over the program in 2002 and it ties the most runs the Rainbows scored under Trapasso. It also marked the worst shutout in FSU history and the worst loss that the Seminoles have suffered in 23 years.
Isaac Omura led the way, going 3-for-4 with three runs and five RBI, while hitting UH's first home run of the season. Joseph Spiers also came up huge, going 4-for-5 with four runs and three stolen bases. Matthew Inouye and Luis Avila both added 3-for-5 games with two RBI and a run each, while Rocky Russo was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double.
The 'Bows got on the board first in the third inning, scoring five runs after the first two batters in the inning got out. Avila hit a two-run single up the middle, followd by back-to-back doubles by Inouye and Russo, driving in a run and two runs, respectively, putting the Rainbows up 5-0.
In the fourth, Hawai`i added three more runs as Ammon hit a RBI-double before Omura smacked his homer, a deep shot to left, making it 8-0.
In the mean time, Bryant kept dominating, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning before FSU's Tony Thomas hit a double.
UH would add two more runs in the sixth and five in the seventh to make the final score 15-0.
The two teams will face off again tomorrow, as Ricky Bauer will take the mound against FSU's Barret Browning. The game is set to start at 6:35 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium.
