HONOLULU - The fourth ranked University of Hawai`i men's volleyball team jumped out to a two games to none lead and then had to hold off No. 10 Stanford to win in five 30-24, 30-24, 27-30, 22-30, 15-13, tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center in front of 2,620 (3,848 tickets issued) fans.
Hawai`i improved to 7-1 overall and kept their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation record unblemished at 5-0. Stanford fell to 3-7 and 2-5 MPSF.
UH made quick work of the Cardinal in games one and two, winning by identical scores 30-24. But the Cardinal roared back to capture games three and four 30-27 30-27 to force a fifth and deciding game.
In Game Five, Stanford led 10-8 before the crowd got the Warriors inspired. UH then went on a 5-0 run to take a 13-10 lead as Matt Bender, Maulia La Barre, and Pedro Azenha put down huge kills in the rally. After Lauri Hakala/s attack attempt went long drawing the Cardinal to within one at 14-13, SU's Craig Buell then got called for a ball handling error to cap the match.
Bender led the Warriors with 17 kills following by Azenha (15), La Barre (14), and Dio Dante (10). Setter Brian Beckwith dished out a season-high 59 assists in the match.
The two teams close out the brief two-match series Friday night at the SCC at 7 p.m.
