LOS ANGELES - The third ranked University of Hawai`i men's volleyball team nearly pulled off the upset of No. 1 UCLA tonight losing in four, 22-30, 26-30, 30-28, 35-37 in front of 1,288 at Pauley Pavilion.
It was Hawai`i's (10-2 overall, 8-1 MPSF) first loss in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action. The Warriors are now tied with UCLA (15-1, 11-1 MPSF) in the league standing with one loss apiece.
The Warriors got a solid effort tonight from setter Brian Beckwith who handed out 63 assists. His main targets were Pedro Azenha (17 kills), Matt Bender (16 kills), and Jose Delgado (14 kills). The Warriors hit a collectively .287 as a team.
UH also got a strong effort from Kyle Klinger who pounded down 10 kills in 17 swings and posted a .529 hitting percentage.
UH had a chance to send the match to a fifth and deciding game, but blew a chance to close out Game Four leading 29-27.
Hawai`i, now 4-20 against the Bruins in Los Angeles, have one more shot at UCLA Saturday night, 7 p.m. first serve.
