HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (5-2) scored runs in the ninth and 10th innings to snag a 9-8 victory over Pacific (5-4) in front of a big crowd of 3,967 at the Les Murakami Stadium Saturday.
Guy McDowell came on in relief to get the win on his 21st birthday, while Eric Stolp (0-2) took the loss for Pacific.
The 'Bows found themselves down by a run in the bottom of the ninth, but got a clutch hit by Matthew Inouye, driving in Jose Castaneda to tie it up at eight. After a one-two-three inning by McDowell in the top of the 10th, UH loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning on two Pacific errors and an intentional walk. Isaac Omura then worked a walk-off walk to bring in Jonathan Hee, giving Hawai`i the 9-8 victory.
Omura led the way for UH, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two walks. Joseph Spiers added a 2-for-5 performance, his fourth-straight mulit-hit game, with one RBI and one run. Inouye and Magana also had two-hit nights.
Richard Olsen had another good outing out of the bullpen, striking out four while giving up just two hits and two unearned runs in 3.0 innings.
Pacific again got on the board first, scoring two runs on a Rainbow error in the second, putting the Tigers up 2-0. But Hawai`i answered right back in the bottom half of the inning, as Derek Dupree hit a two-run triple to right-center, tying the game at two after two innings.
The Tigers again took a quick two-run lead in the top of the third as Jerin Harper hit the first home run at Les Murakami Stadium this season, a two-run shot over the left field wall, giving UOP a 4-2 advantage.
Pacific added another run in the top of the sixth before UH finally had their breakout inning in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded, Luis Avila came in as a pinch hitter and worked a seven-pitch count before walking in the first run. Spiers then came up with a infield single to bring in the next run. Gregory Kish took a walk to tie it at five before Omura came up with a big two-run single up the middle that brought in two runs, capping off a five-run sixth inning to put the 'Bows up 7-5.
That score held until the ninth inning as Pacific hit back-to-back doubles that drove in three unearned runs to put the Tigers up 8-7, setting up the late UH run.
The two teams will close out their four-game series tomorrow, at 1 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium, with Justin Costi (0-1) pitching against UOP's Brett Manning.
