RUSTON, La. - Paul Millsap's free throw with 4.0 seconds left gave Louisiana Tech another late victory over Hawai'i, 71-70, Thursday night, at the Thomas Assembly Center. The Bulldogs snapped the Rainbow Warriors' three-game win streak.
Millsap scored 21 of his game-high 28 points in the first half but his game-winning free throw came after a questionable foul call on Tech's final possession. After a UH turnover, the ball was outlet to Millsap who dribbled into four Hawai'i defenders. The officials called UH's Deonte Tatum for a foul for reaching from behind.
After Millsap made the first and missed the second free throw, the 'Bows had one last chance but Tatum's 3-pointer from 25-feet missed. The Bulldog victory was the second against Hawai'i in the final seconds. In a victory in January, Wayne Powell's putback with 3.3 seconds left was the game-winner in a 61-59 win in Honolulu.
With under a minute to play and the score tied at 70, Matthew Gipson blocked Millsap's shot giving UH the ball back with 30 seconds left. But on UH's ensuing possession, Jeff Blackett could not handle Gipson's pass.
Senior Jake Sottos led UH (13-6, 5-6) with 23 points, including 15 in the second half. Sophomore Matt Gibson finished with 15 points while Blackett had 10.
In the first half, UH led 10-8 after the first media timeout. Midway through the half, Millsap took over, scoring 10 straight points to give the Bulldogs a 16-15 lead. After a Sottos trey put UH on top 20-18, the Bulldogs scored the next 10 points to take a 28-20 lead with 7:14 left.
Tech (12-9, 7-5) built its largest lead of the first half after an Allick lay-up, 41-31, to close out the half. The Bulldogs shot 63 percent in the period, while holding the 'Bows to a 37.1 clip.
UH regained the lead by out-scoring the Bulldogs, 15-2 to start the second half. Tech answered back but UH responded with a barrage of 3-pointers (three by Sottos and one by Sensley) to tie the game at 58 with 8:14 to play.
Two Gibson free throws gave UH a 64-61 advantage. The 'Bows held a 70-65 advantage with just over two minutes to play but five straight Bulldog free throws on three Tech possessions tied the game with 1:21 left. Tech had one made field goal in the final 11 minutes of the game, while converting 13 points from the free throw line.
Of UH's six games this season, five have been decided in the final minute of the game and the difference in all six games was 12 points.
The 'Bows conclude their 11-day road trip at SMU, Saturday, Feb. 12. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. CST (3:00 p.m. HST) at Moody Coliseum.
