HONOLULU - The Hawai'i men's basketball team got back on the winning track with an 82-74 victory over Saint Louis, Saturday, at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors finished their first week of the season at 2-1.
UH forward Julian Sensley led the 'Bows with a 22-point performance. The senior was shut out for the first time in his career in UH's loss to UNLV on Tuesday, but rebounded with 10-of-18 shooting from the field. Sensley also had three rim-rocking dunks, including one at the 12:10 mark of the second half which brought down the backboard support.
Guard Matt Lojeski added 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting from 3-point range and six rebounds. The junior had 15 at the break including four treys. Guard Bobby Nash came off the bench and scored 13 points while forward Ahmet Gueye had 10 points, seven rebounds, and five blocked shots.
In the first half, UH (2-1) used a 15-3 run, including 10 straight, to take a 22-17 lead midway through the period. The Billikens (1-1) could get no closer than two until a 12-4 UH run to close out the half, put the 'Bows ahead 43-33.
Hawai'i built its lead in the second half and the Billikens never threatened. All 12 players in uniform saw action including freshman guards Dominic Waters, Hiram Thompson, and Jack Miller, who all appeared in their first games for UH.
UH junior guard Matt Gibson was suspended indefinitely by head coach Riley Wallace for conduct detrimental to the team. Gibson did not play in the game.
The 'Bows return to action, Tuesday, Dec. 6, against UNLV at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Runnin' Rebels won the earlier meeting between the schools, 67-61, at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
