UH Comeback Falls Short in 80-76 Loss at Boise State

BOISE, Idaho - Hawai'i's road woes this season continued after an 80-76 loss to Boise State, Saturday afternoon, at Taco Bell Arena. The Rainbow Warriors dropped its fourth consecutive Western Athletic Conference road game and fell to 10-5 overall and 2-5 in league play.

UH trailed by 16 at the half and as many as 20 in the second half before making a valiant comeback. The 'Bows trimmed the deficit to single digits but could not get any closer than the final margin. All five losses this season for Hawai'i, have been decided by four points or less.

Junior Julian Sensley scored a team-high 14 points, all of which occurred in the second half. Senior forward Jeff Blackett returned to the starting line-up and recorded 13 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Jake Sottos had another solid outing, tallying 13 points. Forward Vaidotas Peciukas came off the bench and scored all 11 of his points in the second half.

BSU (9-9, 3-4) was led by forward Jermaine Blackburn, who posted 19 points and 11 rebounds. Guards Eric Lane and Coby Karl combined to score 31 points and drained six 3-pointers.

BSU scored the first four points of the second half for a 20-point advantage. But UH responded with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 12. After a Blackburn lay-up, the 'Bows answered with another 8-0 spurt to trim the BSU lead to 53-47 with 13:04 remaining.

The Broncos scored the next five points to push their lead back to double digits. Each time Hawai'i cut the deficit to under 10, the Broncos responded. UH got no closer than seven until under a minute to play.

In the first half, the Broncos jumped out to a quick six-point lead before Sottos found his shooting touch. A pair of 3-pointers tied the game at 14. After consecutive Blackett buckets, the 'Bows had an 18-17 lead with 12:10 remaining.

From that point BSU got hot out-scoring UH, 16-7, during a stretch midway through the period to take a 33-25 lead. The Broncos extended their lead to 18 after a 12-0 run and went into the half with a comfortable 47-31 lead.

Lane and Tezzaray Banks each scored 13 for the Broncos in the first half. BSU shot 57.1 percent from the field in the period and out-rebounded UH, 23-10.

The 'Bows return home to host Rice and Tulsa, Jan. 27 and 29 at the Stan Sheriff Center. Tip-off for both games is 7:05 p.m.
