Warriors Sweep CSUN Series

Hot Hitting Propels UH Past Matadors

HONOLULU - Hawai`i hit .402 for the match in claiming its second straight sweep of Cal State Northridge 30-18, 30-21, 30-22 tonight in front of 2,862 (4,071 tickets issued) at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Hawai`i (4-1) improved to 2-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with its second win in three nights against Cal State Northridge (3-4, 1-3 MPSF).

UH came out on fire in Game One hitting a torrid .417 clip. UH led 6-4 before going on a 6-0 run to pull away 12-6 and cruising to a 30-18 win. Outside hitter Matt Bender led the charge with six kills and two service aces.

Game Two started out much like the first one with UH leading 7-6 before finally putting some distance from the CSUN. Pedro Azenha and Maulia La Barred got hot and kept it up throughout the rest of the match. UH improved their hitting percentage to .531 in Game Two, winning it 30-21.

In Game Three, the two teams were tied at 12 before UH went on a 5-0 run to take command of the game, eventually winning 30-22.

The Warriors hit .402 (54-13-102) as a team, while holding the Matadors under the Mendoza Line at .151.

UH was led by Azenha who put down a match-high 19 kills, posting a .471 hitting percentage. La Barre was very effective with 12 kills in 15 swings and no errors for an .800 average. Jose Delgado also got into the action contributing 11 kills.

UH out blocked CSUN 10.5 to 5.0 as La Barre led all blockers with six.

Hawai`i heads on its first road trip of the season next week when they travel to UC Irvine for a pair of MPSF matches on Jan. 28-29.
