LOS ANGELES-Hawaii picked up its second straight road win with a 2-1 win over USC Friday afternoon at McCalister Field. Freshman forward
Gabrielle Bohlman's goal in the 48th minute proved to be the game-winner as the Rainbow Wahine improved to 2-1-1.
The win could be one of the biggest in program history as the Rainbow Wahine defeated a team that has occupied the upper echelon of the Pac-10 Conference and has been to the NCAA Tournament six straight seasons. It was the second time in three tries that UH has come away with a road win at USC with the first coming in the program's first year in 1994.
Hawaii got on the board first as Natasha Kai scored her second goal of the season less than 14 minutes into the match. Left midfielder Joelle Sugai flicked a through ball to Kai who sprinted past a USC defender and capitalized on a one-on-one with the goalkeeper with a low shot to the far post from 17 yards out.
It looked like the Rainbow Wahine would take the lead going into the break, until the Lady of Troy (1-2) struck with less than 30 seconds left in the half. Jocelyn Hein snuck into the far post, where she headed the tying goal off a cross from the right flank by Ashley Casas.
Hawaii, however, responded quickly out of the gates in the second half. Kalena Eaton and Koren Takeyama worked the right side of the field, setting up Bohlman who found herself wide-open from six yards out. Bohlman one-timed Takeyama's feed past a helpless Julie Peterson to give UH the win and spoil the Lady of Troy's 2004 home opener.
UH concludes its three-game Southern California road-swing with a meeting with Loyola Marymount on Sunday, September 5. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. PST.
