PROVO, Utah - Hawai'i concluded its three-match road trip with a 0-0 double-overtime tie with BYU Monday night at South Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine now stand at 7-2-2 on the season.
The match marked the third straight shutout posted by UH, but unlike its last two matches, the Rainbow Wahine were unable to come away with the win. UH remains undefeated (5-0-1) in six matches this year on the mainland and have not lost in its last five matches overall (4-0-1). The Cougars (3-6-2), meanwhile, snapped a three-game losing streak, yet remain winless in their last five matches.
It was a hard-fought match on both sides, with the Rainbow Wahine displaying resilience despite playing their third match in four days. BYU finished with a 14-9 shot advantage, but UH had a number of golden opportunities to bag the win.
Natasha Kai generated two breakaways in the first half. Her first attempt, a low shot in the 23rd minute, was thwarted by BYU goalkeeper Erika Woodbury, while her second one-on-one in the 37th minute sailed high. Seline Williams fired a shot from 35 yards out that bounced off the crossbar in the second half, while Kelly McCloskey had a point-blank shot in the box blocked by Woodbury seven minutes into overtime. Woodbury finished with five saves for the Cougars.
Meanwhile, UH's Mahie Atay tallied a season-high nine saves to help preserve the shutout and keep Hawai`i undefeated in its last 11 overtime matches (5-0-6). The native of Wailuku, Maui has not allowed a goal in the last three matches, a span of more than 280 minutes.
The Rainbow Wahine return home and open Western Athletic Conference action with a meeting versus Rice on Friday, Oct. 1. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
