WAIPAHU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team picked up its first home win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Long Beach State on the final night of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic. The Rainbow Wahine scored early in the second half and held off a 49er charge to improve to 4-2-1.
UH came into the match winless in three tries at home, including a 2-0 loss to nationally ranked on Friday. Duke captured the tournament title on Saturday by virtue of its 3-0 win over Long Beach State on Saturday, leaving the Rainbow Wahine and 49ers (3-2-1) to battle for second place.
The teams played evenly for much of the match, with Hawai`i getting the break it needed in the 49th minute. UH goalkeeper Erin Chow send a long punt to the 49er side of the field and Long Beach State tried to knock the ball back to its goalie for clearance. But a hustling Natasha Kai stole the ball from a 49er defender and goalkeeper Meghan Hartwyk and poked the ball into an open net for the only goal of the match.
Long Beach State had an opportunity to tie the match in the 76th minute as Kristin Travis fired a shot inside the penalty spot, following a 49er corner kick. The ball swerved to the far post, before UH midfielder Tia Medeiros headed the ball out. Chow got her first start of the season at goal, replacing an injured Mahie Atay, and posted the first shutout of the year for the Rainbow Wahine. The senior goalkeeper was tested several times by the 49ers and finished with six saves.
The Rainbow Wahine next host Portland State in a non-conference matchup on Sunday, Sept. 19. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
