RENO, Nev. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (30-20, 13-12 WAC) beat the Nevada Wolf Pack (29-26, 13-13) 13-7 in front of a crowd of 1,274 at Peccole Park Saturday.
Stephen Bryant (8-4) struck out eight in 6.0 innings to get the win, while
Darrell Fisherbaugh got his sixth save of the season, going 3.0 innings with four strikeouts.
The win was UH's first in Reno, Nev., after losing the previous 10 games at Peccole Park. It also gave the 'Bows their second-straight 30-win season and propelled Hawai`i back into second place in the conference standings.
Rocky Russo had a monster day, going 4-for-5 with with five RBI, two doubles and a run. Gregory Kish reached base in each of his six plate appearances, going 4-for-5 with with four runs, a double and a walk, while recording his only out on a fielder's choice. Matthew Inouye added a 2-for-6 day with a three-run homer while Brian Finegan was 3-for-6 with three runs and a double. Andrew Sansaver also had a multi-hit game, going 3-for-4.
Hawai`i got on the board first as Finegan scored on a double play in the first inning, making it 1-0. Bryant was able to hold the Pack at bay in the first three innings. But Nevada came back as Chris Gimenez hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth, making it 2-1 in favor of the Wolf Pack.
But the 'Bows responded right away as Russo hit a two-run double before Omura drove him in, making it 4-2 Hawai`i. UH then went on to add two more runs in the seventh, driven in by Mendoza and Russo, pushing the Rainbow lead to 6-2.
Gimenez brought the Pack back into it with another two-run home run in hte bottom of the sixth, cutting the defecit to 6-4. But Inouye then came up with the big play for the Rainbows in the top of the seventh, blasting a three-run homer down the leftfield line, making it 9-4.
But even a five-run lead isn't enough in Reno, as the Wolf Pack went on to score a run in the seventh and two in the eighth, cutting it down to a 9-7 game going into the ninth inning.
The 'Bows were able to add four more runs in the top of the ninth on a RBI-single by Mendoza, a two-run double by Russo and a RBI-fielder's choice by Omura, pushing it to 13-7.
Fisherbaugh went on to give up just one more hit in the ninth, making the final 13-7.
The two teams will close the series tomorrow at Peccole Park at 1 p.m.
