LOS ANGELES -The University of Hawai`i men's volleyball team not only ended their three-match losing streak on the road today versus the University of Southern California but also ended a three-match win streak for the Trojans with their 3-1 (30-28, 28-30, 30-20, 30-19) victory. The Warriors are now 12-5, 9-4 MPSF, while the Trojans drop to 6-13, 4-8 MPSF.
Leading the Warrior offense was sophomore Pedro Azenha who put down a team high 22 kills, four service aces and five blocks including one solo block. Also contributing four service aces was outside hitter Delano Thomas, who in addition supplied 18 kills and four digs. Brian Beckwith dished out 53 assists in the match; while Jose Delgado put down 13 kills with a .571 hitting percentage. Hawai`i hit .482 for the match compared to the Trojans .230.
The Trojans came out firing in game one but so did the Warriors who kept it close to start. Hawai`i jumped to a tentative two point lead by mid-game as USC continued to keep the pressure on. Leading things for the Warriors was Thomas who had six kills in game one and was hitting .750 by game's end, giving the Warriors the win, 30-28.
Game two played out much like the first one with the Warriors and Trojans staying even for much of the game. At 25-all, the Trojans only allowed three more Warriors points before taking the game, 30-28.
But in the third game it was all about the Warriors as the squad dominated the court hitting an amazing .714. Pedro Azenha had seven kills for the Warriors in that game and also contributed one service ace. On the Trojans court, Joao Grangeiro hit .857 with six kills but was no match for Hawai`i who went on to win game three, 30-20.
The Warriors again dominated in game four, taking an early 7-2 lead before four more Hawai`i points made the score 11-2. The Warriors out hit the Trojans in the fourth, .448 to .074. Hawai`i ended the game and the match at 30-19 off a double block by Azenha and Joshua Stanhiser, who had three blocks for the night.
Chapter two of Warriors versus Trojans will take place Tuesday night at the North Gym on the USC campus at 7:00pm PST.
