HOUSTON - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (14-9, 0-2 WAC) fell to the No. 7 Rice Owls (16-5, 5-0 WAC) 3-0 in front of a crowd of 3,162 at Reckling Park Saturday.
Stephen Bryant (2-2) got the loss despite giving up no earned runs in a complete game effort. Philip Humber (4-1) broke a school record with 17 strikeouts while picking up the complete-game victory.
Bryant pitched really well for the 'Bows, going 8.0 innings, giving up three unearned runs while striking out a career-high seven Rice batters. Gregory Kish had the best performance at the plate for Hawai`i with a 2-for-3 game. Jaziel Mendoza and Brian Finegan were the only other UH batters with hits.
The Rainbows gave Rice unearned runs in the first, fifth and seventh innings and that was all that was needed. Humber's 17 strikeouts also tied the UH record for most strikeouts by an opposing pitcher. It was also the first time Hawai`i was shut out this season.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow as Clary Carlsen pitches against the Owl's Wade Townsend. The game is set to start at 1 p.m. CST.
