'Bows Open Tourney with 12-1 Win Over Chicago State

Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (10-7) defeated the Chicago State Cougars (0-4) 12-1 in front of a crowd of 2,265 in the first day of the First Hawaii Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament Tuesday. Keahi Rawlins gave up just one run and one hit in 5.0 innings to get the win while Aaron Lang got the loss for CSU. The game was shortened by the tournament's 10-run rule after six and a half innings.

Nathan Thurber led the way for the Rainbows, going 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs. Rocky Russo added a 2-for-4 night with five RBI and a homer, while Andrew Sansaver and Matthew Inouye also had two hits each.

Hawai`i took control in the first inning with six runs and never looked back. Inouye started it off in the first with a RBI-double before Russo knocked a three-run home run to right field. Thurber then homered to center later in the inning, scoring two more for the 'Bows to make it 6-0.

Chicago State scored one in the fifth to cut it to 6-1, but the 'Bows responded with another huge inning, scoring six in the bottom of the fifth, including two more driven in by Russo, making it 12-1.

The Cougars weren't able to score in the sixth or seventh inning, giving the 'Bows the 12-1 win due to the 10-run rule.

Chicago State will take on the Citadel in tomorrow's first game at 12 noon while the Rainbows play host to Oregon State in the 6:35 p.m. game. UH will probably pitch Stephen Bryant (1-1) against OSU's Kyle Aselton.
