Santa Barbara, Calif. -The Warrior volleyball team, now 2-1 for the seaon, struggled early on but finished strong in their regular season debut against the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara (3-2). Hawai`i lost the first game but came back to snatch the match away from UCSB, 3-1 (31-33, 30-25, 30-25, 30-27).
UCSB came out swinging in game one. Determined to put a dent in the 36-19 all time record the Warriors hold over the Gauchos, UCSB took the first game 33-31. But by game two, Hawai`i reached their stride, easily taking the game, 30-25. The Warriors led by as much as five in game two and by game's end sophomore Jose Delgado already had nine of his team high 20 kills.
Game three saw much of the same action as Hawai`i continued to dominate, commanding a 28-22 lead before capturing the game 30-25. By the conclusion of game three, Delano Thomas had already acquired three of his team high four aces. In game four the Gauchos tried to catch up but were put down, 30-27.
In addition to Delgado's 20 kills, Thomas and Matt Bender both put down 14 kills. True freshman setter Brian Beckwith in his MPSF debut had his 3rd 50-assist game this season.
For the Gaucho's, freshman Evan Patak had a team high 20 kills and 2003 MPSF honoree had nine digs for the evening. UCSB also out blocked the Warriors, 12 to 7.5.
Hawai`i next faces the Gauchos Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
