'Bows Victorious on Senior Night, 77-63

Box Score

HONOLULU - On Senior Night it was only fitting that Hawai'i men's basketball guard Mark Campbell had one of his best passing games, in the Rainbow Warriors' 77-63 victory over UTEP, Saturday, at the Stan Sheriff Center. The senior, who leads the Western Athletic Conference in assists, matched his career-high with 11 as the 'Bows wrapped up with regular season with a 17-10 overall record.

Hawaii clinched the No. 5 seed in next week's Williams WAC Tournament in Tulsa, Okla. The 'Bows, who are the two-time defending champions, will face Nevada in its quarterfinal match-up at 6:00 p.m. CST.

Seniors Campbell, Ryne Holliday, and Lance Takaki were honored following Saturday night's game. Campbell started all but one game during his career while Holliday and Takaki saw little action during their careers but were instrumental members of the scout team.

When Holliday and Takaki entered the game with just minutes left, the near-sellout crowd erupted to their feet. The crowd went wild when Takaki, who at 5-foot-4 is one of the shortest players in Division I basketball, took a charge under the basket.

Guard Michael Kuebler scored a game-high 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting for the 'Bows. WAC player of the year candidate Carl English had 16 points and six rebounds. Forward Phil Martin posted his eighth consecutive double figure point game with 13 points.

The Miners, who finished as the No. 9 seed, made a game of it in the second half. UTEP trimmed a nine-point halftime deficit to three with just under nine minutes to play. But the 'Bows answered back with a 12-3 run including a no-look pass from Campbell to Martin which put UH ahead 65-53.

In his two year-career, Campbell ranks in the Top 10 in UH history in assists (322), assist average (5.4).

The 'Bows leave for Tulsa, Sunday, in preparation for its third consecutive WAC Tournament title. Hawai'i and Nevada split its games during the regular season.
