Rainbows Beat Bruins 8-3 to Win the First Series of the Season

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (2-1) defeated the UCLA Bruins (3-4) 8-3 in the series finale at the Les Murakami Stadium Sunday. Ricky Bauer (1-0) picked up the win for UH while Casey Janssen (0-1) got the loss for UCLA. Clary Carlsen picked up the save for the 'Bows. The attendance at the game wa 2,649.

Rocky Russo led the way for UH at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Brian Finegan added a 1-for-3 day with two RBI and a run scored while Andrew Sansaver went 1-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a double.

Bauer went six innings, giving up just one earned run to pick up the win. Carlsen pitched solid in relief, giving up just one run in three innings.

UCLA scored a run in the top of the first on a Wes Whisler sacrifice fly before Russo singled to right field, scoring Isaac Omura and Brent Cook, to put the 'Bows up 2-1. Sansaver would double in a run in the second before Finegan would single in two runs in the third to put UH up 5-1.

From there, it was all pitching and defense as the Rainbows would make many outstanding plays in the field to preserve the 8-3 victory.

Hawai`i will take one day off before hosting UH-Hilo at the Les Murakami Stadium on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 6:35 p.m. Following that game, UH will host Sacramento State for a three-game series, running from Feb. 14-16.
