HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (7-2) fell to the No. 27 Wichita State Shockers (8-1) 4-3 in front of a crowd of 3,746 at the Les Murakami Stadium Saturday.
Justin Cayetano (1-1) got the loss for UH while Tommy Hottovy (1-0) picked up the win for the Shockers. Mike Dennison also got his third save of the year for Wichita State.
The Rainbows jumped out to an early lead when Brent Cook hit a solo-home run in the bottom of the first inning, putting UH up 1-0. Wichita State responded with a Cody Clark solo-homer in the second inning to tie the score before Cook and Joshua Green drove in a run each in the fourth inning, giving the 'Bows a 3-1 lead.
The Shockers came back in the fifth inning as Nick Blasi hit a two-run home run and Clark drove in another run, putting WSU up 4-3. Hawai`i would have opportunities to score, but they left four straight innings with the bases loaded, and fell by the final score of 4-3.
Cook led the 'Bows, going 3-for-6 with a homer and two RBI. Tyler Wightman added a 2-for-3 day with a run scored while fellow freshman Rocky Russo tied a UH record, walking five times in the game. Brian Finegan went 1-for-3, extending his hitting streak to nine games.
Cayetano went six innings, giving up three earned runs while striking out six. Freshman Richard Olsen pitched well out of the bullpen, striking out three while giving up just one hit in three innings of work.
The two teams will close their series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium with UH's Ricky Bauer and Wichita State's Mike Pelfrey scheduled to pitch.
