Hawai`i Blasts Shockers 7-3

Rainbows Get Homers from Bock and Montgomery

HONOLULU -- The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (7-1) used two big home runs defeat the No. 27 Wichita State Shockers (7-1) 7-3 in front of a crowd of 2,667 at the Les Murakami Stadium Friday. Christopher George (3-0) got the victory for UH while Mathew Jakubov (1-1) took the loss for Wichita State. Clary Carlsen got his third save of the season for Hawai`i.

Timothy Montgomery led the Rainbows, going 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and two runs scored. Brian Bock also hit a homer, going 1-for-4 with two RBI. Rocky Russo continued to swing the hot bat, going 2-for-3 a double and two runs scored while Brian Finegan extended his hitting streak to eight games with a hit in the third inning. Andrew Sansaver also hit well, going 2-for-3 with a triple, one RBI and one run scored.

George ended the game with 6.1 innings pitched, giving up two earned runs while striking out eight. Carlsen went 2.2 innings, giving up just one hit while striking out five.

UH got on the board first in the third inning when Brent Cook sacrafice bunted Montgomery in to put the 'Bows up 1-0. Hawai`i added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Sansave tripled in an RBI and Bock hit a two-run homer over the left field fence.

The Shockers came back in the top of the fifth, scoring a run in the fifth and two more in the seventh to cut the UH lead to 4-3. But then Montgomery blasted a three-run shot over the left field wall in the bottom of the eighth, giving the Rainbows the 7-3 victory.

The two teams will face off again tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium. Justin Cayetano (1-0) is scheduled to pitch for Hawai`i while Steve Uhlmansiek (1-0) is penciled in for Wichita State.
