Hawai`i Comes Back in the Bottom of the Ninth to Beat Sac State 8-7

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (6-1) defeated the Sacramento State (5-4) 8-7 in front of a crowd of 2,594 at the Les Murakami Stadium Sunday. Michael Peck got the win for Hawai`i while Andy Mohr picked up the loss for Sacramento State.

Brian Finegan again led the way for UH, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, a run scored and three walks. Rocky Russo also had a great day, going 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. But the hero for the day was Joshua Green, who went 2-for-5 with two RBI, including the game-winner. Timothy Montgomery added a 2-for-4 performance with two RBI and one stolen base.

The Hornets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before Russo tied the game with an RBI-single in the bottom half of the inning. Aiea native Aaron Powell put Sacramento State back on top in the second inning when he hit a two-run homer over the right field wall. Montgomery saved the 'Bows more damage by making an outstanding throw to get a runner at the plate, holding the score to 3-1.

Montgomery then did it with the bat in the bottom of the third inning as he hit an RBI single to left field, cutting the Hornet lead to 3-2. But Sacramento State extended their lead in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs to go up 5-2.

Finegan then singled in a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and Montgomery added another in the seventh, cutting the Hornet lead back down to 5-4. But Sacramento State came back in the top of the eighth, scoring two more runs to extend their lead to 7-4. Green would add a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of eighth, cutting the deficit to 7-5, going into the ninth inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Sacramento State pitchers would walk in two runs to tie the game at seven before Green drove in the game-winning run on an infield single, giving UH the 8-7 victory.

Hawai`i now awaits No. 30 Wichita State, who will play the Rainbows on Feb. 21, 22 and 23 at the Les Murakami Stadium at 6:35 p.m., 6:35 p.m. and 1:05 p.m. The Shockers will play a six-game series with UH-Hilo before coming over to face the 'Bows.
