HONOLULU - Four players combined to score 76 points in Hawaii's 92-64 victory over New Orleans, Saturday night, on the final day of the adidas Festival at the Stan Sheriff Center. In the victory, senior forward
Phil Martin became the 11th player in school history to score 1,000 career points.
The majority of UH's (5-2) scoring were provided by Martin (18), senior guard Michael Kuebler (29), sophomore forward Julian Sensley (16), and senior center Haim Shimonovich (13). Kuebler led the team, tying a career-high with 29 points on 9-of-18 shooting. Martin added 18 points and eight rebounds while Shimonovich (13 pts./10 rebs.) and Sensley (16 pts./10 rebs.) both posted double-doubles.
The 'Bows won for the third consecutive time and surpassed the 90-point mark in consecutive games for the first time since 1981. As a team, UH shot 54 percent from the field and recorded a season-high nine 3-pointers.
Ben Elias led the Privateers (4-3) with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
Both teams came out firing in the first half, hovering near the 60 percent mark from the field. UH led 22-18 midway through the period but built its lead to 28-18 after a Shimonovich putback. The 'Bows maintained its lead and extended it to 13 (43-30) at the half. Kuebler, Martin, Shimonovich, and Sensley scored all but two of the team's points.
Martin also joined the elite 1,000/500 (points/rebounds) club, joining Melton Werts and John Penebacker. In his four-year career, Martin has 1007 points and 509 rebounds.
In the earlier game Texas Southern edged Idaho State, 69-61. The Tigers used a balanced attack led by guard Sean Walker's 21 points. ISU's Jeff Gardner was held scoreless in the second half after scoring 16 in the opening frame.
The 'Bows next host the 40th Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic, Dec. 27-30. The field also includes American, Bowling Green, East Tennessee State, Fairfield, IUPUI, Lamar, and Pepperdine. UH opens with Lamar, Saturday, Dec. 27.
