HONOLULU - Hawai'i shot a season-high 52.9 percent from the field in its 97-67 victory over Texas Southern, Friday night, on Day 1 of the adidas Festival at the Stan Sheriff Center. All 12 players in uniform scored for the Rainbow Warriors, who also set season-highs in points, 3-pointers and assists.
The 'Bows drained eight 3-pointers, dished out 25 assists and received a boost from its bench, which scored 49 points.
Senior forward Phil Martin posted his eighth career double-double in leading the team with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman sensation Bobby Nash scored a career-high 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting while sophomore Julian Sensley added 10 points.
TSU's Damien Smith scored a game-high 27 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from 3-point range.
UH opened the game with an eight-point lead (13-5) on consecutive fastbreak baskets by center Haim Shimonovich. Moments later, Shimonovich completed a three-point play to give UH an 18-7 lead.
With under 2:00 to play, Hawai'i opened up its largest first half lead at 48-27 after consecutive baseline jumpers by Nash. As a team, the 'Bows shot 57.1 percent to take a 51-33 halftime lead. In addition, Shimonovich and Martin combined for 9-of-11 from the field.
The bench got into the scoring act for the 'Bows in the second half, combining to score 34 of the team's 46 points.
In the victory, Martin became just the eighth player in school history to record 500 points and 500 rebounds in his career.
In the tournament's opening game, New Orleans held off Idaho State, 86-72. Johnell Smith 16 of his game-high 27 points in the first half as the Privateers built a 38-31 halftime lead.
The doubleheader concludes Saturday with Idaho State taking on Texas Southern at 5:00 p.m. followed by Hawai'i and New Orleans at 7:05 p.m.
