Kuebler's Last Second Heroics Sink Beavers, 70-67

Box Score

HONOLULU - Senior guard Michael Kuebler's 3-pointer with :01 remaining in overtime lifted Hawai'i past Oregon State, 70-67, Monday night, at the Stan Sheriff Center. The game was UH's (3-2) first regular season contest at the Sheriff Center in 24 days.

The teams', who met for the first time since 1984, combined to shoot 39.1 percent from the field, including 25.7 percent from 3-point range. However in overtime, both teams found their shooting touch, converting 8-of-13 from the field.

Kuebler finished with a game-high 24 points, including 15 after intermission. Senior forward Phil Martin added 21 points, including two clutch shots at the end of regulation and in overtime. Julian Sensley grabbed 10 rebounds and Jason Carter recorded five steals.

Guard Chris Stephens scored 18 for the Beavers, who dropped the last two games in the series, which dates back to 1940. David Lucas added 14 points and 13 rebounds.

In overtime, the Beavers (4-3) scored on each of their first four possessions to take a 65-61 lead. A pair of Kuebler free throws cut the deficit to two, but Hurd's baseline jam put OSU ahead 67-63. Kuebler converted on another pair and after an OSU turnover, Martin's dunk with 48.3 tied the score at 67. Another Beaver turnover gave the ball back to UH, and the 'Bows held the ball until Kuebler's final shot.

OSU trailed for the entire first half but took its first lead (40-38) at the 15:36 mark on a Kyle Jeffers bucket. From there, the 'Bows held the Beavers scoreless for the next seven minutes while scoring 10 straight, on three fastbreak layups, to go ahead 48-40.

But the Beavers inched back and used a 15-5 run, capped by Lamar Hurd's 3-pointer, during a seven minute stretch to take a 57-55 lead. The 'Bows forced overtime after Martin's turnaround jumper in the lane tied the score with :05.7 remaining. J.S. Nash took the ball the length of the court and his running lay-up missed as time expired.

During the game, former UH coach Red Rocha was introduced to the crowd. Rocha served as coach for 10 years and helped guide the 'Bows to the NIT and NCAA tournaments for the first time in school history.

Hawai'i next hosts the Adidas Festival, Dec. 19-20, at the Sheriff Center. Participating in the tournament are Idaho State, Texas Southern, and New Orleans.
