BOISE, Idaho - The University of Hawai'i's six-game win streak came to an end, Saturday afternoon, amid controversy. Boise State (8-4, 2-0) pulled out a 65-63 overtime victory in front of 3,911 at the BSU Pavilion.
With the Rainbow Warriors (8-2, 1-1) leading 55-53 in the waning seconds, BSU's Booker Nabors missed on a driving layup but Aaron Haynes was there for the putback at the buzzer. The referees conferred and ruled the basket good. Before that Bronco possession, the 'Bows'
Carl English was called for an offensive foul with :28.7 remaining, although one official ruled it a foul on Boise State.
In overtime, the 'Bows had two chances to tie or win the game in the final seconds. With under :10 to play and Boise State holding a 64-63 lead, guard
Jason Carter drove down the baseline and was allegedly fouled but none was called. After Soloman Wyatt made one of two free throws with 4.3 remaining, Carter was stripped by Joe Skiffer to end the game.
English scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field. Carter chipped in with 15 off the bench.
Michael Kuebler added 11, including four in overtime.
After a pair of
Nkeruwem Akpan free throws, UH held a seven-point lead with 1:34 remaining in regulation. But Haynes drilled a 3-pointer at the top of the key to pull BSU to within four. On UH's next possession, forward
Phil Martin missed from point-blank range which would have given the 'Bows a six point lead. Instead Akpan fouled Jason Ellis on the rebound and after two free throws, BSU trailed 55-53 with 1:00 left.
Hawai'i, which played its fifth game in nine days, turned the ball over a season-high 24 times, which led to 18 Bronco points. The 'Bows also out-rebounded BSU, 35-27.
In a tightly contested first half, Haynes ended the period with a putback off Ellis' miss at the buzzer. That basket gave the Broncos a 27-25 lead into the locker room.
Haynes finished with a team-high 16 points. Ellis added 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The 'Bows return to Honolulu, Sunday, in preparation for a pair of WAC games against SMU, Jan. 9 and Louisiana Tech, Jan. 11.
