Late Wolf Pack Spurt Finishes Off 'Bows, 73-65

Box Score

RENO, Nev. - Nevada used a 14-0 run late in the second half on their way to a 73-65 victory over Hawai'i, Saturday night, at the Lawlor Events Center. The Rainbow Warriors dropped its third consecutive Western Athletic Conference game to fall to 11-5, 4-4 in league play.

Guard Carl English paced the 'Bows with a game-high 27 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the field. It marked the junior's sixth 20-point game of the season. Michael Kuebler added 12 points, all in the second half, and five steals. Nkeruwem Akpan pitched in with 10 points and four rebounds and Mark Campbell dished out nine assists.

The game was a dogfight until the Wolf Pack's second half run that sealed the victory. With the 'Bows holding a five-point lead after an Akpan jumper at the 8:09 mark, Sean Paul converted a three-point play to cut the deficit to 52-50. On Nevada's next possession, Kirk Snyder's putback tied the game and after two missed shots by UH's Phil Martin, Paul's baseline jumper gave the Wolf Pack the lead, 54-52, with 5:37 remaining.

UH failed to score on its next two possessions, while Nevada scored twice, including a Jerry Petty 3-pointer with 3:20 left, putting the Wolf Pack ahead, 61-52. English ended the drought, which lasted just over five minutes, with his third trey of the game. But Petty answered right back to put Nevada back on top, 64-55 with 2:14 remaining.

Petty scored all of his 13 points in the second half, while tying a career-high with three treys. Snyder finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Todd Okeson had 14 points and four steals.

UH shot 43.1 percent from the field but made just 3-of-15 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc. The Wolf Pack out-rebounded Hawai'i, 39-31, including 13-8 on the offensive end.

The 'Bows failed to pick up its first victory over Nevada in Reno, losing for the fifth time. UH returns to Honolulu from its three-game, 11-day road trip, Sunday. The team arrives at Honolulu International Airport at 12:23 p.m. on United flight #67. This coming week, Hawai'i hosts Rice, Thursday, Jan. 30 and Tulsa, Feb. 1.
