HONOLULU - The top-ranked Warriors were shocked by No. 11 Stanford, dropping their first contest of the season, 30-28, 30-25, 27-30, 27-30, 8-15, despite 31 kills from All-American
Costas Theocharidis and 25 more from freshman
Pedro Azenha.
Theocharidis, a 6-foot-3 senior outside hitter, posted his 10th 30-kill outing of the year while committing only eight errors in 59 total swings. Azenha, making the first start of his Warrior career, committed only four errors in 45 attacks to post a match-high .467 attack percentage.
Hawaii also received a strong performance from freshman libero Matt Motter. Motter, making the first start of his career, recorded a season-high 16 digs. Fellow rookie Joshua Stanhiser continued his rapid improvement, with 10 kills to register his third straight double-digit kill total.
Junior setter Kimo Tuyay also performed well, dishing-out a season-high 73 assists to lead the Warriors to a .335 attack percentage, while also establishing a new personal best with six kills. Sophomore middle Delano Thomas led all players with eight total blocks.
In the first game, Hawaii followed the lead of all-time school kill leader Theocharidis, who picked up right where he left off in game four two nights prior. The native of Orestiada, Greece slammed down a game-high eight kills with just one error in 13 swings to spark the Warriors to a .349 team attack percentage. Theocharidis lifted Hawaii to a four-game win on Wednesday, recording 11 of his match-high 26 kills in the final frame.
Theocharidis remained hot in the second game, with seven more kills, while freshman Azenha added five of his own as Hawaii captured the 2-0 lead by out-hitting .321 to .239. Stanford All-American Curt Toppel broke through with five kills in the game, after recording just two kills in nine attempts in game one. Toppel finished with 26 kills to lead a Stanford team that had four starters record double digit kill totals.
Like they did on the first night of the series, Stanford regrouped to take game three, out hitting Hawaii, .359 to .270 in the set. Toppel remained aggressive game three, adding seven more kills to his total. Warrior outside hitter Azenha topped Hawaii with seven kills of his own, pushing his three-game total to 16.
Stanford pushed the match into a sprint to the finish fifth game by taking the fourth set despite a Warrior squad that hit .405 in the game. Theocharidis recorded eight more kills, while Azenha slammed down seven in the game to record his first 20-kill performance of his collegiate career, with 23 through four games.
The Warriors depart on their first road trip of the season this coming week to face No. 2 UC Irvine and No. 8 Long Beach State.
