HONOLULU -- The No. 4 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (5-0) defeated the San Diego State Aztecs (2-3) 30-10, 30-11 and 30-23 in front of a crowd of 6,522 at the Aston Imua Wahine Volleyball Challenge in the Stan Sheriff Center Friday.
In the most dominating performance of the year, UH was led Lily Kahumoku. Kahumoku had an "unreal" match, slamming 17 kills with no errors on just 23 attempts for a hitting percentage of .739, a tournament record, in just two games. The junior served 14 straight points in game one, putting Hawai`i up 21-4. She then opened game two, scoring eight (seven kills on nine attempts and one block) of the Rainbow Wahine's first 11 points, before finishing the second game with 11 kills and a .846 hitting percentage.
Fellow All-American Kim Willoughby also had a great match, tallying 15 kills, 10 digs and three service aces, while hitting .565. Also stepping up for Hawai`i were Nohea Tano (six kills, five digs, .600 hitting percentage), Lauren Duggins (six kills, nine digs), Margaret Vakasausau (29 assists, seven digs) and liberos Melissa Villaroman and Hedder Ilustre (seven digs each).
As a team, Hawai`i hit a season-high .406, while holding San Diego State to a negative hitting percentage (-.009). The 10 and 11 points scored by the Aztecs in the first two games were the two lowest allowed by the Rainbow Wahine this season.
San Diego State was led by Zlatina Anguelova and Kara Moriarty, who had six and five kills, respectively, while Moriarty hit .333.
UH will face the Washington Huskies tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the championship match of the Aston Imua Challenge. Washington swept San Francisco in an earlier match Friday, 30-14, 30-18 and 30-23. The Dons and Aztecs will face each other at 5 p.m.
